To commemorate Youth Day 2021, Zomnotho Community Development (NPO) fulfilled its commitment to pay a special visit to 15-year-old Olwethu Madlala’s family home in Gamalakhe Township. Back in the year 2016, on his way from school, Olwethu was involved in a near-fatal hit-and-run motor vehicle accident that left him disabled at the tender age of 10. Zomnotho met Olwethu in one of the organisation’s community outreach campaigns which was dubbed ‘YOLO’- an acronym for the popular youthful phrase You Only Live Once. This is when the organisation discovered that he had learning difficulties that suggested his cognitive development lagged some distance behind his age and required special schooling in order to bridge the gap. Unfortunately, the accident did not only take away Olwethu’s left leg but it also affected his learning abilities and memory due to the serious head injuries he sustained which also forced him out of school.
